    Hi, I'm fresh out of high school and want to get into the UX/UI design field. I'm not exactly sure how to get from point A to point B though. I've heard there are a lot of different ways to get the education and skillset needed but I'm not sure what would be the most helpful. Does it make more sense to get a college degree in a related field or spend that time learning the skills on my own through things like bootcamps and UA-cam tutorials?

    • @DesignGal
      @DesignGal 4 місяці тому

      It really depends on how you best learn and if you want to make the investment in a college education. I still believe a degree is valuable if you can get it, but it's not 100% necessary these days. If I were to do it again today, I'd probably go down the same path I already took - degree in some kind of visual/graphic design (esp if they focus on digital design and not print) and then take some additional coursework/certificates on the UX side. Hope that helps!

    • @JRToyReviews
      @JRToyReviews 4 місяці тому

      @@DesignGal Thanks so much for the help! I really appreciate it. I am a very independent learner since I was homeschooled so I'm sure I could do either option. I have seen that a lot of job listings on Indeed prefer a degree so it seems like it may be good to have. One of the degrees I was looking at was digital marketing since I would learn some principals that I think may be helpful for the UX side. I'm already pretty good with the visual side of things so I was thinking it may be a good idea to get a degree more on the UX side and learn the UI side through things like Bootcamps and things on the internet. Do you that may be a good idea? Thanks again!

    • @DesignGal
      @DesignGal 4 місяці тому

      @@JRToyReviews bootcamps tend to focus on UX rather than UI, though there are some great courses for UI like Shift Nudge for instance. Digital marketing probably won't have a whole lot of direct crossover to UX unless you want to specialize in growth design, which tends to be more on the marketing/web side.

    • @JRToyReviews
      @JRToyReviews 4 місяці тому

      @@JRToyReviews it's been a while since I was in college so I'm not sure what's out there these days! I would do a little more research, but something as close to true UX as you can find.

    Basically now they expect you to know the entire Adobe CC Suite, Figma, Sketch, Coding, Illustration, all while you "keep learning" and pay you 50k. Meanwhile the old boys, Gen X Creative Directors with psychology degrees don't have half the skillset or design chops and would be equally screwed if they started now. Also, there are too many cooks in the kitchen. Everyone thinks they know what's right and has a different opinion and you will end up making 10,000 iterations and updates. RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Christine, I plan to major in graphic design for uni next year, and every uni website I look at has a degree that leads to graphic design under a different name- fine arts, studio arts, design, and so on- could you help and explain what I should be looking for when trying to find a degree that can put me on the graphic design career path?

    • @christinemaggi
      @christinemaggi 11 місяців тому

      It really depends on the school! In my case, I majored in "Art & Design" with a concentration in Graphic Design. I would look for something with Design in the title. Fine Art/Studio Art are likely to be less design focused and more on actual art (painting, sculpting, etc.).

    I went to community college to save money but TOOK IT SERIOUSLY! I got way more out of it than a lot of my classmates because I put more into it. I thought I was fine as a designer until I went to community college at 27 for an AA. When I finally did, I got as much out of the lessons, projects, etc. as possible, including unrelated General Ed. and I learned way more than I ever learned from being self taught. Seeing other people's work, hearing other people's questions, and the answers to those questions helped a ton. So did ingraining the basic principles of design instead of treating them as an intro to get through.

    I started to work for an agency (as a developer) 6 months ago. here is my experience so far: CONS: - direct customer contact - constant project switches (multiple times a day) - extreme tight deadlines - the need to write everything down what I did - no clear tasks - no one is there to help me... because coworkers are also very busy. - daily bullshit status meetings and some additional surprise meetings. PRO: - I learned a lot... but not really enough to be a pro in one project / tech. all of this, results into pure STRESS. In the end of a day I feel very exhausted without having really done much. I will quit soon and search for a "normal" job where I can be a human again and not think about hanging myself. I tried to search for a job while I am still hired but it is very difficult.

    It’s hard nowadays. It seems many companies want “designers” or graphic designers to be EVERYTHING. The skill set they want is so broad and honestly feels underpaid for the amount of software intelligence we must have on top of our analytical thinking skills. Sometimes they even lump in marketing too.

Everything you need, including apps, tutorials, and even those puke-inducing "art history and common theories" that were at least a year's time wasted worth of college requirements - are all available either free of charge, or for dirt cheap via the internet, and you can learn at your own leisure!
